About Ironwood Counseling and Wellness

Brandon D. Lackey

My name is Brandon Lackey, and I am an Associate Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, supervised by Dr. Deborah Grant, PhD, LPCS, CRC. My more than 25 years of working with individuals and families overcoming life-controlling problems encouraged me to shift my professional focus to helping alleviate the harmful effects of trauma.

I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an effective treatment for healing trauma and emotional wounds. I also draw from evidence-based and holistic practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based approaches. My goal is to help you acquire the skills, tools, and insights you’ll need for the current and next stage of your journey, and to help you eliminate those that no longer serve you well.

I view counseling as a collaborative partnership. Your lived experience - your story - adds value to therapy. Together, we will pause to rest where needed, lighten your burden, and chart a path forward that feels both possible and purposeful.

The Ironwood Tree

The Ironwood tree is often overlooked in the forest. Modest in height and unassuming in appearance, it is not the towering oak or the graceful maple that catches the eye. Ironwood is among the hardest and densest woods found in North America. Early settlers discovered that it resisted splitting, even under repeated blows, and they relied on it for tool handles, wooden mallets, wagon wheels, and any place where strength under stress mattered.

What makes the Ironwood tree extraordinary is not only its hardness, but its endurance. Unlike many trees, it resists rot and decay. It weathers storms, survives in the thin soil of creek beds and ridges, and stands firm when lesser trees give way. Where others fall to insects or fire, the Ironwood endures. Its resilience reminds us that true endurance is not found in the sprint but in the marathon.

In many ways, the Ironwood reflects the human spirit. Life’s hurts can feel like storms—losses that uproot, traumas that scar, struggles that threaten to break us. Yet healing is not about avoiding these realities but developing the inner strength to withstand them, adapt, grow, and emerge stronger. Just as the Ironwood is prized for its usefulness, shaped into tools that endure daily strain, our lives can be shaped by our lived experience into instruments of meaning and purpose.

Ironwood also teaches us about resistance to corruption. In a forest where decay is inevitable, it holds firm. In the same way, counseling can help us identify the unproductive patterns that eat away at our well-being and replace them with beliefs and practices that preserve and strengthen us.

At Ironwood Counseling and Wellness, the Ironwood tree stands as more than a symbol. It is a promise. You are not defined by the storms you’ve weathered, the losses you’ve endured, the burdens you’ve carried, or what was done to you. Like the Ironwood, you can grow stronger through adversity, resist what seeks to hollow you out, and become a source of lasting strength and stability for yourself and those around you.
